Home remedies have been passed down for generations but there is very limited scientific data on the effectiveness and safety of the home remedies.

There are no substantial studies conducted with home remedies which have proven that they are effective or safe in the long-term.

Although certain home remedies such as amla, tulsi, fennel and cumin have shown anti-ulcer activity, no scientific studies conducted on humans have proven its efficacy in healing ulcers.

Baking soda only provides temporary relief from acidity and heartburn. It is not a permanent solution and can have adverse effects.

Antacids are over-the-counter (OTC) medications that help neutralize(counteracting) stomach acid, reducing the acid secretion in the stomach, reducing the amount of acid that is refluxed into the esophagus or emptied into the duodenum and by inhibiting the activity of pepsin, a digestive enzyme produced in the stomach that is active only in an acidic environment

Antacids can be used to treat symptoms of excess stomach acid, such as:
Acid reflux, which can include regurgitation, bitter taste, persistent dry cough, pain when lying down, burping, hiccups and trouble swallowing
Heartburn, which is a burning sensation in your chest or throat caused by acid reflux
Indigestion, which is pain in your upper gut that can feel like gas or bloating

Antacids cannot treat more serious problems, such as appendicitis, gallstones, bowel problems etc. Speak to your physician if you have:
Pain or symptoms that do not get better with antacids
Symptoms every day or at night
Persistent nausea and vomiting
Bleeding in your bowel movements or darkened bowel movements
Pain in your lower belly, on your side, or your back
Diarrhea that is severe or does not go away
Fever with belly pain
Chest pain or shortness of breath
Trouble in swallowing
Weight loss that you cannot explain

Antacids should be used when you have symptoms or think you will get them soon – for most people, the best time to take them is with or soon after meals, and just before going to bed.
Check the instructions on the packet or leaflet to see how much antacid to take and how often. This depends on the exact medicine you're taking. Remember that doses for children is lower than for adults.
Contact a doctor, if you take too much of the medicine or start to feel unwell or for additional advice.

If you persistently suffer from acidity, heartburn, acid reflux or any other symptoms of discomfort in the stomach, please consult your doctor.

Gastric acid is needed in the stomach to help break down the food and nutrients before they can be fully digested in the intestinal tract.

Cigarettes contain nicotine, which relaxes the ring of muscle around the food pipe that keeps gastric acid in the stomach. When this ring relaxes, stomach acid can travel upwards in the food pipe till the throat and mouth causing acid reflux and heart burn.

Coffee as well as other caffeinated drinks are highly acidic by themselves. They stimulate the stomach to secrete excess acid which may lead to acidity and symptoms such as burning sensation and discomfort in the chest, also known as heartburn.
